Motorola is holding a new competition that allows creators to come up with new moto mods. Moto Mods transform your phone into a different device (via Motorola)
Motorola were on top of the cellphone game until Samsung trumped them with their Galaxy line. With Samsung’s recent setback with hazardous the Note 7, Motorola is hoping to get back on top with their new line of Moto Mods. These accessories allow you to change your phone into different devices. Some of the new mods include a camera, movie projector, speaker and extra battery pack. Sounds pretty good so far, but Motorola is only getting started. They want to create more mods in the future and they need your help.
The phone company has teamed up with Indiegogo for a new competition to create the best Moto Mod on the market. Developers have from now to January 31st, 2017 to submit their best ideas for a new mod. The moto team will pick their favorite mods and invite the creators to a hackathon where they’ll be encouraged to create a crowdfunding campaign for their idea.
The finalists will then get a chance to pitch their mod at Motorola’s headquarters in Chicago for funding from Lenovo Capital and getting their product in Verizon stores. Prizes also include a chance to win an MDK and a Moto Z. All you need to do is submit your idea for a chance to win. The company has even made their Moto Mods Development Kit (MDK) available to the public. Along with this competition Motorola will be hosting a number of hackathons around the US hoping to inspire creators to act on their ideas. The first event will be held in New York in December. Those who successfully create Moto Mods during this hackathon will also get a chance to take part in the Indiegogo campaign as well. The second hackathon will happen in January in San Francisco. It's no surprise Motorola is turning to these mods to standout in the mobile market. They were top dog when they dropped the first Droid seven years ago, but the company has been struggling to keep up as bigger, better, and sleeker looking phones hit the market. Admittedly, having mods that transform your phone into different devices is cool, but it’s not enough to win everyone over. The phone itself has received poor reviews due to its lackluster battery life and missing headphone jack (why is this a trend?). The mods make it a bit more appealing, but since phones already have the capability to take photos, play videos, and music. Most are not willing to pay extra for mods that perform the same functions. Hopefully, the community can come up with mods that make the phone more appealing.
I will be doing a series on the Moto Mods very soon. So, let's try this contest together, so to speak!
