Newly elected CEO and President of IEEE Saifur Rahman recently published a note that focuses on students and young professionals in the engineering fields looking to advance their careers. The president touched on fostering collaboration and strengthening IEEE’s impact globally, prioritizing engagement with young students, professionals and communities in an effort to bolster IEEE’s recognition as a dynamic force for change. Rahman also touched on the importance of membership within the community, especially for those looking to gain insight into networking opportunities and access to technical literature.
The president also emphasized the role of local engineers and technologists in delivering solutions to address community challenges, such as food shortages, clean water, healthcare and affordable energy. Rahman also touched on young professionals’ enthusiasm for addressing climate change and sustainability issues and the demand for a diverse skill set to address those challenges. Moreover, he touched on the importance of promoting STEM education through programs like IEEE’s TryEngineering and REACH as a means to highlight the organization’s commitment to bolstering community education.
Drawing from his personal experience, the president emphasized the importance of mentorship, especially for those just entering their careers. Rahman also urged young professionals and engineers to continually evolve and understand the broader impact of their discipline on the world, with the idea that communities can be made better by addressing the issues that impact everyone. He noted that building bridges and connections can drive positive change in communities and industries worldwide.
