In an effort to get more schoolgirls interested in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields, Marvel has teamed up with the National Academy of Sciences’ Science and Entertainment Exchange to create a new challenge. The challenge pits school girls in grades 10 through 12 to design projects based on those respective fields in an effort to, as Marvel puts it- ‘reform the future’ by simplifying our lives, helping the disabled or by just making life a little better here on earth. You start small and then see what you can get.
Coincidentally (or not), the challenge coincides with the new Marvel movie Captain America: Civil War and five runner-ups will get to walk the red carpet for its premier.
The Girls Reforming the Future Challenge, which recently ended, allowed the girls to submit new projects or those previously developed for school projects with the caveat that it’s beneficial to humankind. Each participant were then tasked with making a video describing their project, what they learned during its development and what the next steps will be for their projects.
The lucky winner of the challenge will receive an internship with Marvel Studios, the company responsible for blockbuster movies such as X-men and The Avengers. What’s more, five finalists will each receive some pretty cool prizes including a $500 savings account, a trip to Hollywood to present their projects to the Marvel judging panel, participate in a live Broadcom Masters webinar, the opportunity to walk the red carpet for the premier of Captain America: Civil War and a tour of Walt Disney Studios.
It’s not currently known what exactly the internship at Marvel Studios will entail or what department the chosen winner will work in, however there is an entry question on the entry form that asks what they would like to learn from the studio. This might be indicative to where they would be posted. The challenge has since ended and the winners have yet to be announced, however they should be posted within the next week or so. Is there an “Iron Girl” or “Iron Woman” from the comics? Like a Tony Stark relative?
