Similar to other big players, like NVIDIA, Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm, MediaTek is making a big splash by developing its own AI PC chipset. The Taiwanese chip maker plans to launch these Arm-based CPUs for Windows PCs in late 2025. This year, Microsoft’s agreement with Qualcomm for Arm-based Windows versions is set to expire, and MediaTek could be the perfect replacement.
MediaTek is well-known for designing and fabricating SoCs for electronics. However, the chip expects to use Arm’s ready-made designs instead of its own CPU architecture based on the Arm instruction set. That has the potential to boost development speeds. For instance, Arm executives say that a customer used the ready-made components to create a chip in nine months for a completed design. More experienced chip designers generally take over a year to develop and test advanced chips.
Apple has successfully produced Arm-based chips for its Mac computers, so it’s not surprising that Microsoft is focusing on using Arm designs. This may even challenge Intel as a leader in the PC market.
Additionally, NIVIDA and AMD are developing Windows-based Arm chips set for a 2025 release. While the MediaTek chip is distinct, the company partnered up with NVIDIA for this product, but there isn’t any information available on it yet.
