The automotive industry is in the middle of a massive transformation due to evolving business models and mobility preferences, but also because of technological developments. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Over the Air (OTA) algorithms, Machine Learning, Electrification of Vehicles and infrastructure, advancement in sensors and semiconductors, Self-Driving Vehicles, and more are not only disrupting the traditional automotive ecosystem but making it obsolete.
Adopting innovations in the automotive market usually take OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers around seven years and considerable money invested in testing, qualification, and certification; slowing down the innovation/adoption of new products. Startups are becoming key players in bringing innovation into every automotive vertical: mobility (car sharing and car-pooling, ride-hailing), electrification, connected car and IoT analytics, advanced human-machine interactions, cybersecurity, driver safety, mapping solutions, and more. OEMs have leveraged their platforms (GM Ventures, BMW Start-up Garage, Ford Venture Capital, JLR Tech Incubator, or Volvo Venture) partnering, investing, or joint-venturing with several startups to embrace faster innovation.
The Start-Ups disrupting the Global Automotive and Mobility Industry, 2016–2017 study from Frost & Sullivan identified and analyzed automotive-related startups across several verticals based on their solutions and their global reach. They calculated about 500 startups around the world but ended with 1,700 disruptive companies offering solutions from connected car technologies to aftermarket applications providers.
