Microsoft confirms it’s acquiring GitHub for $7.5 billion

Considering this is a forum to share code, I thought it be a good place to post that it appears that Microsoft will purchase GiitHub for 7.5bil.    I'm not sure how this will impact GitHub's future, but being Microsoft and all, I would imagine it will go to some sort of pay type of site.

It will interesting to see where this goes. GitHub has been a useful site to many based on it's free usage, but it is hard to see Microsoft not wanting to generate a return on its investment. Time will…

    Hi Jon,

    Quoting from Satya Nadella's blog:

    ...

Given all of this, together with GitHub, we see three clear opportunities ahead.

First, we will empower developers at every stage of the development lifecycle – from ideation to collaboration to deployment to the cloud. Going forward, GitHub will remain an open platform, which any developer can plug into and extend. Developers will continue to be able to use the programming languages, tools and operating systems of their choice for their projects – and will still be able to deploy their code on any cloud and any device.

Second, we will accelerate enterprise developers’ use of GitHub, with our direct sales and partner channels and access to Microsoft’s global cloud infrastructure and services.

Finally, we will bring Microsoft’s developer tools and services to new audiences.

    ...

Now, Microsoft is obviously looking at making money from this deal, but I do believe GitHub's free usage tier will be preserved, as it would spectacularly backfire if they moved the platform to a paid access only.

Hopefully the integration will be smoother than the one we experienced with the acquisition of Skype few years ago...
