What Do You Think of the Connector E-Guide?

rscasny
rscasny over 5 years ago

I was in a meeting today and a colleague pointed out to me the Connector e-guide. Here's the URL:

https://www.newark.com/connector-eguide-pcb-board

I think it's a well-designed page that summarizes different connector types such as:

  • Component-to-Board
  • Board-to-Board
  • Wire to Board

Each type provides you with more information on each type.

I think it's a helpful tool that communicates a lot of information in an informative manner.

What do you think of this connector e-guide?

How would you use it?

How could it be improved?

    Hi Randall,

The initial tab didn't get too much interest from me, probably as I am familiar with many of those Component-to-Board solutions, however being able to visually see the options under the other two tabs is invaluable, either in identifying a suitable match for an existing board/part or when designing something from scratch. Thank you for highlighting this valuable asset.

    Hi Randall,

I liked it too, and finally learned a name for a connector that I was interested in (SIP connector - I always searched for SIL and found the wrong stuff). It's nice, the images help a lot, especially for the more complex connectors like the stacking ones, where there are different variants.. now it's easier to refine by photo first. Also I've found interesting ones I've never heard of before, like 'slimstack'!

This type of gallery search is nice. From my perspective, an improvement could be to (over time) just keep adding more photos : ) even if they are for similar categories, or more narrower categories, the further down the page one scrolls.

The concept is pretty good - I like starting with pictures.

It would be nice for the final results pages to have a button that links to the starting selector guide.

I went looking for a connector that would extend the pins of a Raspberry Pi GPIO header.

There didn't seem to be a category for board-to-board receptacles, but I eventually found a couple of suitable Samtec connectors under Board-to-Board Elevated.

When I went to the Samtec connector page, there was an interesting button to find similar products - this came up with a suitable Harwin connector that didn't seem to show up in any filtered parametric searches that I tried.

Next I looked for Dupont style single pin and socket connectors.

I found receptacles by Amphenol and TE Connectivity but couldn't find the mating plugs or pins.

The Associated Products list is useful - showing crimp inserts and tools and even a header, but not a crimp plug.

It would be very useful on all connector pages to have a button that brings up a list of mating connectors.

I like searching for stuff visually as well - probably because the old UK Maplin electronic components catalogue was like that. If fact if I want to find something online, say I wonder what types of prototype board there are, I'll often switch Google into the image mode as I find I pick stuff similar to what I want much quicker like that.

Haha, I usually try to search for the same connector when I see new pages of a component distributor.

    I had the same result...
