Website organization/Simple questions

Hi

As a noob to electronics, I'm frequently trying to find the answers to very simple questions both on this site and in greater googleland. Today's incredible time-waster is how to wire a tip jack. After being inundated offsite with where-to-buy, I thought I'd try here since I had some very helpful discussions before, but I can't even figure out how to get something like that started. Is there a beginners guide to this site so I can figure out how it's organized? Somehow, I found enclosures when I needed it, but I'm lost and would like to pose the above simple question to the proper forum. Is there a how-to section for those of us who don't know anything? Just trying to figure out where to post this has proven difficult. Thanks!!

    Hi Ed,

The general guideline is just try to find one location that may approximately be appropriate when you are in the text box next to 'Browse Places' when posting a discussion  (in this case, for a jack, I would have typed something like "connectors" to find the nearest suitable place). But I think most people here understand it's not always possible to pigeon-hole discussion questions optimally always.

If you're talking about a headphone type jack, the male end usually has the 0V or screen connection at the end closest to the connector body.

The tip and ring are left and right, which are usually white and red wires (not sure if there is a standard on that). The wikipedia page has some information.

    Hi

Thank you for the reply. I see where your connector suggestion makes complete sense, though coming in it didn't. I guess I just have to keep posting until I figure it out. As for the jack, I was talking about a tip jack. I think it's supposed to be wired/soldered on the thin end and the wide part receives the probe, and I was looking for a way to confirm that. After spending WAY too much time on it, I thought I'd try asking. That worked extremely well before, but I hesitate to take too much advantage of such generosity.

    Hi Ed,

I'm not sure what a tip jack is, but if you can post a link to a page for it or a part number (preferably in a new discussion, so that it's no longer in Feedback & support), hopefully me or someone else may recognise the part.

I'm wondering if you mean this type of thing: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banana_connector
