Do-it-yourself single pair ethernet installations

I'm looking for any information on installing Single Pair Ethernet (SPE). This is both socket and plug assembly and installation.

I have the tools to install RJ45 socket and plugs for Cat 5/6 installs. I'm researching requirements to be able to make cables onsite for SPE.

I discovered the e-book resource in E14 but am looking for some first hand experience. What is available for connectors, crimpers and cable.

Agree. CAT6 has improved BW. I use the SOHO for testing SPE. I looking to assemble my own cables and connectors.

    Hi Sean,

It depends on the rest of the equipment that is being installed. For instance, this manufacturer suggests using their connector, and that it would suit some Single-pair Ethernet installations:

    https://www.harting.com/DE/en-gb/single-pair-ethernet

On the other hand, some installations/environments may use a completely different connector. For instance, M8 or M12 circular connectors, or even directly screw-terminal.

Same with the cable.. if you're installing in a location with legacy systems, then thy may reuse existing cables. Otherwise, every manufacturer will suggest using their cable which they will have tested with their bits of the solution. It's different in that respect compared to "normal" Ethernet where usually it's pretty clear (depending on if copper or optical connections are being made, but even then there is some variability, since there are variants of those too!).

Example connector (by Phoenix Contact, for use on their Single-pair Ethernet hardware at least). This one has IDC connections inside for the wire:

What SPE devices to you have to connect up? When road testing the BeaglePlay, I couldn't really see any other commercially available SPE devices.

Reading your review spawned this question.

I tend to be a research obsessed before making a purchase. I currently use RJ45 CAT 5 connections throughout the SOHO network. I've installed them all and have been doing it since the early 90's.. I'm now looking at devices that support SPE. Yeah it looks promising but what are the costs? I despise buying cables if I can inexpensively and consistently build my own.

My search of Newark site for SPE equipment produced few results. Two barrel assemblies and a locknut.  The connectors do not match the specification mentioned here. This doesn't give me confidence that the technology is something I want to invest in at the moment.
