How would you change Element 14?

Element-14 is a fun, and ever growing, website to visit. I've had over a hundred troubling problems solved here. There are a lot of benefits to being on E14, like Roadtests and CadSoft.


But, you visit here, what would you like to see on the site? What should be different? Have an opinion? Voice it.

  • Get rid of the idiotic site policy of using a person's full name for their postings, instead of their username.  It's bad enough that employers are trying to look at everyones' Facebook profiles to see if there's anything disagreeable in there.  Not having anonymity means people won't express their true opinions about things.

    If you edit your profile you can 'hide' your full name and only your username will show, the same way you can hide your email address.

     

    Simply click on the link for your name at the top right, then when on your profile display page, choose 'edit profile' from the options on the right.  You can then set the radio button to 'hide' for your full name.

     

    Future versions will give more granularity over visibility of all areas of your profile information. allowing you to show/hide from guests, registered or connections.

    Ah thanks, I must have missed that radio button somehow.  I'm quite paranoid about future employers seeing my comments about the industry.

    As for "standing behind what you write" as the other poster said, that's a crock.  If you're an outspoken person in today's society, you can expect to not have a job.  Nowadays, we have employers trolling Facebook looking for pictures of people being drunk, or doing other things in their private time that employers don't like for whatever prejudiced reason.  What you do or say off-the-job is none of their business.  Keeping yourself anonymous is necessary these days if you want to stay employed.    I personally know of several people who missed job opportunities because of their Facebook profiles.

    I don't want to get into big argument with you since for all I know you might be my mother in law ;-)

     

    But my point is that if you start a relationship with an employer or anyone else on the basis of pretending to be something you are not then it is very unlikely that the relationship will work. I (and I think a good many of the other regulars here) try to be honest and sincere - if a future boss/client/whatever can't take that I think I'm better off without them.
