Would you take performance enhancing drugs for your profession?

I'm not talking about steroids or human growth hormone, since we're all not pro athletes. But we are professional engineers, using our brains, and a lot of people are talking drugs to enhance that part of the body. It turns out, according to Scientific American, an ever growing number of students, leaders of the industry, and professors are taking drugs to give themselves a little edge. Energy drinks, coffee and other caffeine delivery products are not even what they're all using. Most are taking prescription Ritalin, Adderal, Modafinil, Methylphenidate, Provigil, any pill for ADD/ADHD. The result, superior focus, energy, a competitive edge. The regular hapless salary man, tired at all times, will never compare to that young go getter hocked up on Ritalin and Red Bull.

We don't approve of such activities in our sports, but we turn our backs everywhere else. Writers have been doing this for centuries, for example. Hemmingway, Warhol, Hunter S. Thompson, R. Crumb, and most musicians have taken some Mood altering consumable that lead to moments of inspiration and creativity that have shaped our culture.

Does all this mean we have to start doping to get ahead? And if we're prescribed these pill legally, is that still bad? Though doing this is not frowned upon like in sports, it does still give a bad connotation. However, we all do it to some degree, if only in a mild sense. All those coffee pick me ups, the 5 hour energy supplements, anything with the word "boost" printed on the label.

20% of academics, according to the journal Nature, have admitted to using some sort of stimulant. 7% of students too. 73% of poker players use substances to stay focused. Nearly 100% of truck drivers are on something. Once you apply the word "drug" to stimulants it's immediately evil and illegal. But, which is worse, alchohol and cigarettes or Adderal for someone's body? I think I would rather have someone on Modafinil driving behind me than drunk.

Intellectuals are doing it, and they're smart, right? How do you feel about doping for the job?

    Cabe,

I would rather get a good night sleep than take any stimulant or drug. Whats the point in "pick me ups"? Once you get your 8-9 hours sleep you don't need anything of the sort.

If you take too many stimulants of any sort you are going to mess up your sleep pattern, and if you take drugs that are not prescribed by your GP you don't have a clue what side effects they could have on you and your GP will only prescribe them if you do need them.

So my answer is no to drugs or stimulants.

    Chris.

Recent studies have also shown that coffee drinkers do not have any advantage from their morning coffee over non-coffee drinkers.

What happens is that the coffee returns the drinker to the normal level instead of boosting anything and when they can not have coffee, they work below normal levels.

But this is related to caffeine addiction of course.

Oh, now there's an interesting question.

Personally, I'd say 'No, not for me.' - I can see the short term benefits of these drugs, but who knows what the long term effects will be?

To me it kinda feels like people that take these drugs are cheating - it's not their natural ability they are exercising, but rather it's an artificial aid. A bit like wearing flippers in a swimming competition!

Having flippers in a swimming contest is the whole point. They want an advantage over their peers. The ability to create more, do more, to catapult themselves to the success they strive to obtain. I would like to see further studies to find out if professionals taking stimulants has helped their career any. If it's anything like the sport world, I would assume it has helped.

After making this post, I decided to cut out all coffee and energy drinks as an experiment. I want to see if I have the same level of energy naturally.

Day one: Feeling worn out and tired, with a bit of a headache.

    Day two: Still tired.

    Good experiment, Cabe image

If your body was properly addicted you can first try to use decaffeinated coffee and then drop that out also.

Withdrawal symptoms can last from few days to a week, depending on the amount you consumed before.

    Keep us posted.

Day two (continued) : I actually felt more awake, but in a cognisant way. Perhaps before I was in a walking daze caused by all the energy drinks and soda. I had an opportunity to get a large soda over lunch. The thought of drinking it was repulsive. That is a quick switch on how I used to think.

Day three : No desire for soda or caffine of any sort. I see this is an easy break, I hope the trend continues.

I am drinking a lot of seltzer water now. A refreshing, carbonated drink with nothing in it.

I'm back on the caffeen wagon. I'm not saying I'm proud of it.

I've recently took on a few more projects than I have time for. If I ever needed a performance enhance is now.
