  • Hi Paul,

    I have a question for you.  I'm joining a pic hobby group to collaborate with others on concepts/designs/efficient code.  This group is starting from scratch with a Microchip pickit 2 eval. board setup. We will be writing our code in assembly.  Do you have any recommendations on books or tutorials on how to start writing code for the Microchip pics in assembly?  I have experience with software design, but this is my first attempt at programming in assembly. Thanks in advance for any info.

    First off great to see people still loving the idea of writing code in ASM. I’ve not seen any books on starting out this way but would ask is maybe you should consider the Hi-Tech C compliers. These are very good now at working on even the very small PIC10 and PIC12s.
     
    If you are staying with ASM then as I have said above I think your best option in learning by example – but would seriously consider the C compliers as the overhead is tiny for the benefit of the C language.

    There are loads of books about PIC assembler programming (not so popular now so look for secondhand or offers) and a lot of good information on the Microchip website. The only book on the subject that I actually own and have read is The PIC Microcontroller by John Morton. OK but not brilliant. Do be careful that any book you buy covers the PIC you are planning to use.

    I would like to know what made you choose PIC and assembler.
