What is Arduino?

Former Member

There appears to be a lot of interest and groups actively working with Arduino at individual level and within education segment.

Strangely though, why is it so few within major semiconductor brands know anything about this?

Any experience, expertise, knowledge out there would be welcome, especially if there is some easy material to work with.

Arduino is a simple hardware and software system based on Atmel AVR microcontrollers with a bootloader and the simple Wiring programming language and Processing IDE.  The device can be programmed without the need for a seperate programmer.

It's intended to make the implementation of electronics easier for those not familiar with electronics, such as artists, but has been widely adopted within the hobbyist community.  Many different 'shields' are available to add additional features to the basic development boards, such as ethernet or motor control.

There are also many different Arduino clone boards available, with differnet board layouts, features or microcontrollers, which are compatible with all shields as well as the bootloader.

    http://www.arduino.cc has tons more information.

Just seen a response to the question from Kevin. The question is well answered but there is also a document posted titled 'About Arduino'.

Have a quick look, perhaps it gives a little more info before going onto websites for details.

We too have been seeing a lot of feedback on the subject - let you decide how you'd want to proceed.

Nice informative document, and good to know that Arduino hardware will potentially be available through Farnell.
