Transistors not labeled, what to do?

There are no identifying marks on a bunch of transistors I have in surplus. (Is it typical to have lots of extra parts laying around, or am I mad?)

How can I distinguish which transistor is a pnp or npn?

I have one of these

I love it, stick the leads on almost anything, gives you the part type, gain and more. I pull it out any time I want to test or identify a part, match transistors, check their gain or threshold.
