Embedded WiFi recommendations?

fustini
fustini over 14 years ago

Howdy,

I was wondering if anyone might have recommendations for WiFi modules for a low-end embedded system.  I'm primarily thinking of Arduino so a simple interface to the radio would be ideal (not USB).

Thanks,

Drew

You are perfectly right Julian Freescale has actually 3 different Wifi modules based on 3 different chipsets from 3 different suppliers( http://www.freescale.com/webapp/sps/site/overview.jsp?nodeId=0152106740AFE4…

There is also TI CC3000 which is a UART-to-WIFI module, probably a more compact solution with respect to the MCW1001A+MRF24WB0Mx couple. Although I've used the Microchip's one in a dev-kit of theirs and…

The Microchip MRF24WBOMx modules are great, especially due to the low price, and existing code for 8bit PIC, AVR and Arduino etc. I'm successfully using it with an ATMEGA168 (or better) and WPA2/AES encryption…

I have finally managed to get the PIC24EP512GU810-I/PFPIC24EP512GU810-I/PF Starter kit + MRF24WB0MA to run the demo web page, and so far have just toggled led's and buttons on the board.

Great to see.  I think I'll probably go with that WiFi module, but it'll will be a tough decision to go AVR or PIC when I start working on my wifi project again.

    Hi,

Thanks to the recent acquisition of RovingNetworks by Microchip, there are plenty of new 802.11B/G WiFi modules, adapters and developers kits which can be also used for embedded low power WiFi applications : http://www.rovingnetworks.com/products/Wi_Fi_Products

The modules will become easier to source on a worldwide basis in the next months through the larger global sales network from Microchip.

The modules are UART / SPI based. Any microcontroller can control them easily as the TCP/IP stack run on the WiFi module itself ;=)

Yeah, I'd seen a headline for that - very interesting.  I have actually been using RN-131C which is on SparkFun's WiFly Arduino shield.
