Companies that design PCB for honest prices?

Former Member
Former Member over 9 years ago

Greetings,

I am looking for a company that is able to design a PCB, that I can send to a PCB manifacturer, starting from components.

My availability is not that much, I just started to look into the possibility to make the first batch of PCB, probably 50 or 100, but before I need someone that actually make the PCB design.

I found some that does PCB production, but not that much info about who is offering a design service; any suggestion? I would like to avoid unsafe sources; it is not nice to figure out that the design was done wrong; once you spent thousands for PCB production and components.

Thanks!

Luke

I would suggest designing the PCB yourself, especially since your design doesn't seem particularly complex. To find a board house that will design your board (the way you want it), mill it, and populate (assemble) it without charging you an arm and both your legs... the chances are slim. There are many free options as far as PCB design software goes for a lower number of layers (4 or less), or you could go with Eagle as peterjcs23said. I'm currently working on a more complicated design with Eagle and I find that there is a lot of online help and the learning curve isn't as steep compared to Altium or OrCAD. With that being said, a quick search on the Google led me to (https://www.sfcircuits.com/pcb-production-capabilities/pcb-design-and-layout) which is a manufacturer that does all that you're looking for and is located in the San Francisco area. I did not do a deep enough search to see how the pricing compares to other local board houses though. If you're looking to save money but are willing to risk long delays and quality you can have it done in China. If not, I agree with gadget.iomgadget.iomthat using a local manufacturer can be advantageous.

As long as it's all included in the schematic you want made into a PCB, it's just software after that. The hard part for you, it sounds, will be delivering the exact schematic you want made into a PCB. If I were doing this, I would ask for a complete schematic, and I would produce a PCB. If there was a problem in the design of the schematic, then it's not the PCB designers fault. Do you have a budget?

you could try linkedin, it throws up some PCB designers with Eagle PCB Design as the search term...

    https://www.linkedin.com/vsearch/p?type=all&keywords=eagle%20pcb%20design%20&orig=FCTD&rsid=919504061462347511482&pageKe…

Or you could appeal for help on the EAGLE support forum here at element14.

Most likely I won't solder the board; the components are SMC, I can solder small components but I never did IC; since their pins are too close together.

I am aware that costs go up when you have the manifacturer to solder the components, but it goes long way in the overall quality of the board.

One thing that I am not sure is related to the microcontroller: I use an arduino compatible board, but I assume that if I have to design the PCB, I need to include also the part that does the bootloader for the code?

On a standard arduino compatible clone, you upload the code via usb and bootloader; not sure how would it work when you actually make a PCB.

This sounds like an easy design. Are you going to solder the board yourself, or are you looking for a company to deliver a product with all components soldered on?

Not that complex; fundamentally I have 3 sections:a microcontroller, a bluetooth to serial and a I2C chip to talk with multiple I2C devices; a voltage regulator to work with 3,3V, a battery charging chip, so I can hook up a Li-Po battery and that's all.

The micro expose I2C and SPI, plus few analog in-out pins; which I would like to keep connected in case I need to expand the design. IT took me few hours to put it together with wires and breakout boards; but I would like to not have to deal with breakout boards, and make my own.

How complicated is the design? Digital and analog?

Which from a quick search, seems to require a PCB design, and this is exactly what I need help with image

I am in the San Francisco area; I did a preliminary search but found nothing for makers, as far as design from scratch.

Most of what I found were more on the industrial side of things; and I am just a regular guy working in his garage image

sounds like the most important thing will be to find someone local, where are you based?
