What is the proper NEMA standard to specify dustproof requirements for the controller, motor, and other accessory apparatus?

Mike, That's a very good question.  For dustproof requirements, NEMA 12 would be the logical choice.  However, NEMA 4 also would work well.  Once you have selected your desired materials, check out the products that are available through Newark and determine which NEMA rating is the most cost effectibve.  Also, take a look at the whitepaper on the top 5 pitfalls in designing a NEMA enclosure!  http://www.newark.com/pdfs/techarticles/bud/Top_5_pitfalls_designingNEMA_enclosures.pdf

Hi - thank you for your question:

We do not have a standard product that is 4U in panel space that wall mounts.  Therefore, you have a few options that may depend on your quantities:

    1. Raise your panel space requirements.  We do have a 4U unit (the econocab(EC-9902 ) that could be configured to wall mount or you could create a simple wall mount bracket

    2. You could have a custom unit developed.  Typically, you would need to run at least 50 to 100 to have a major manufacturer make this cost effectively.

    3. In terms of the heat source, I am not sure what you are specifically looking for, but we do not offer those.  I am sure Newark may have some options for you

Thank you again for your question.  I hope my answer helps

    Susana,

Blair's reply to you was excellent.  As he mentioned, Newark has some cabinet heater solutions at this weblink:

    Dear Mr. Haas,

I'm currently working on a power conversion device for a large automotive application. The power converter is positioned on a place where the climatic conditions are far from ideal. I need the select a type of enclosure for the following conditions:

    Temperatures surroudings : -40C +65C.

Air surrounding enclosure: moist, sand, salt.

High pressure water hose cleaning proof (chemicals and waterpressure).

Shock and Vibration force: > 15G

The device is not water cooling, but by forced air. The air tunnel can be on the outside of the cabinet. The fans can be in a somewhat less difficult environment.

There has to be an opening on the from but only needed for service engineers. No hinges or others needed.

    The volume is about: Width=30cm, Depth=40cm, Height=65cm

Can you recommend: type of material, IP-rating and system of sealing?

    Thanks in advance

    Best regards, Enrico Migchels

    Hi Enrico

This is a product request that not within our capabilities.   This has to be a very  special box made like a tank – possibly made of thick wall glass reinforced  polycarbonate plastic material and Silicone gasket for sealing. The box will  probably also need shock-mounts to withstand >15G. This is a custom design  project that needs to be handled by professional in automotive  field.  I am not sure who would make this type of box but again, you might search for automobile component manufacturers and see if they can provide assistance.

Sory I could not be of more help

    Hi Blair,

Thanks for the reply. It is good advise to look for extrenal companies with experience in this field. I will just do that.

    Hi Blair,

I'm a Noob, just signed up, and it said you were the robotics guy, so this is not an enclosure question.  I am the director of a small library in a small village.  I have some funding (and am writing grants for more) for a rockets and robotics program for the village teens.  I have two toy robots to convert to FA (Buster and Wall-E).  My plan was to use EZ Roobots kits, inorder to make the conversion.  I am brand new to actually doing robotics, I've only read some bits and pieces, and am working on the Robot Builders Bonanza and Robot Building for Beginners.

Is it best to purchase a kit and go that route, then learn Arduino and work on the next bots using that?  The kit seems to be a good value, and I dopn'ty have much info on what I really need to buy other than I know I need IR sensors for distance, battery pack, camera for the eye, servos to control the arms and tractor drive, motors to actually turn the wheels and gears for movement, and of course a breadboard/board.  This might be oversimplifying, but since I will be learning along with the teens, I feel a kit is a good starting point.

My hope is that I can ispire one or two kids to actually go into robotics and bring their degrtee and some manufacturing back to the village.  I also hope that we move from converting toys to creating some small battle bots, or enter in some of the robotics challenges.  To that end, I am hoping to write a grant one day that includes a ShopBot CNC machine.

Any advice you or the others can share would be welcome.

    Thanks so much.

    Kent

    Yo Blair,

I am abit like Kent Barnard, more about the robotics than the enclosure and i am only new at this.

I was wondering if you could suggest come useful tutorial to be that i could begin with.

I am confident in programming i have just recently learnt the Arduino programming lanaguage

and Processing suggested byJeremy Blum when i first joined.
