What is an easy free way to convert CAD drawings to useable Gcode?

Currently the biggest issue I'm having in this planning phase of making a arduino powered CNC mill is finding a good (freeware/shareware) way of converting my CAD files to usable Gcode. From everything I have read the easiest way to do this is to first run a .obj file through a CAM software and then interpret that into Gcode. Does anyone know of a good way to do this, I use autodesk Inventor to do all my drawings? I also have access to solid works while on campus, but I'm pretty sure both programs can output all the same file types. Anyways thanks for the help and updates to follow as I make progress.

    Hello Chris,

The way most 3d printer users do it is to export out a stl file from your modeling software and download slicing software such as Slic3r Slic3r - G-code generator for 3D printers or Repetier Host Repetier-Host Documentation | Repetier Software just to name a few.  These 2 are free for download.  From there you can export out a gcode file.  Just remember these are made for printers so some mods will have to be made.   I would also check out this link GCODE Generators - ReplicatorG.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Would those programs work for a CNC mill as well or are there different programs for that and 3D-printers, because in the long run I plan to also setup a swapable extruder head. Having a single software setup and only having to change out a router head to an extruder to convert between a CNC router/mill to a 3d printer would be ideal.

Yes, Slic3r has a setting for Mach3/EMC or "No Extrusion" for others besides Mach3 .

The last link I attached on the earlier post has some gcode generators specifically for CNC machines but both will work.  You will have to play with the settings to get the most out of you machine.
