Difference between Mounting type Surface Mount and PCB

Hello everyone,

I am a fresher, and I need to buy some SMP connector. I found there are two types of connect mounting: surface mount and PCB.

Could anyone please tell me what the difference between these two types? Thanks ahead. (Does "PCB" mount type require to leave 4 holes for its foots when designing my PCB?)

Difference is typically that one uses through hole as you describe, this would be for the electrical connectors and sometimes additional supporting connections, either way they all go through the PCB and make a very strong join

Surface mount are just that, there are no holes through the board and they are soldered to the PCB tracks on the side there mounted on

Strength is often that of the PCB track adhering to the board, not the mechanical strength of the through hole connection

The nice thing about the SMD connectors is they can be re-flow soldered along with the other chips and discrete components rather than a separate post reflow operation
