Monitoring Water Level in a Tank

I wan to automate a test that I conduct frequently.  I want to record the drop in water level in a water tank over 30 minutes then trigger a valve with solenoid (able to operate by gravity flow, no pressured water) to refill the water back to same level and then wait another 30 minutes.  Each time interval will have a set of data representing the water level in the tank.  I was told I need a microcontroller, an e-tape (from Milone technologies) and a water valve.  Can anyone help in pointing out what instruments are needed and how to connect them.  I was told that I don't need a data logger if the controller can control a valve and log data.  If someone an help , I will draw a sketch if needed. Regards

    One thing, the solenoid for use in this situation is of a special type, like this:

    Thanks for your valuable input.  Now I have the valve and e-tape.  I am looking for a controller with data logger or without.

    You could use the SparkFun Logomatic v2 or a more complete system version (KTA-265).

    On a previous post (Some time last year) we had a member doing level measurement of a tank using an ultrasonic sensor, had perhaps a board floating in the liquid perhaps to increase the sound reflection but it was able to fairly accurately measure the level in the tank an nothing was immersed in the fluid


    The solenoid part seems to be covered by other members already and that's great, the Arduino UNO or pretty much any of the current boards can do the processing job, including the PI etc. so im just providing an option re the distance measurement

    Peter and Doug thanks for the input, I am getting closer to a solution.

     

    Peter: the ultra sound device sounds good, I only need to be within 1/8" accuracy. Can you tell me where to get the item and how to connect the pieces together. I will buy the items as soon as I hear from you.

     

    Doug: thank you again.  I want to also build the items you suggested.  having two systems is awesome. Do you think you can help in putting these together.  I will buy the items now and I will get in tough with you when I receive them; can I do that.

    I would be happy to help with advice if I can. However I have not actually used a Logomatic.

    If I were doing this myself, I would use a low cost water level sensor (~$3) I designed long ago and do the datalogging and valve control with a PSoC4 ProtoKit (~$4).
