Multiplexer for Pi Camera Module

Hello,

 

I am new to element14, and appreciate your help.   I am a wildlife ecologist interested in surveying wildlife and livestock.   I am experimenting with a Raspberry Pi with a camera and a stepper motor to take panoramic images every minute or so.  Enjoying the process, but ...

 

Ideally I would prefer a solid state solution.   I would like to connect 8 Pi cameras to a single computer.   **I do not need signal from all of them at the same time**   I just need to pole each camera in turn.   I think I need a multiplexer, but a design ... or even the chip in question ... is beyond me.   Do you have any pointers?   Are there places on the web where I might contract with a designer for an embarrassingly small amount of money to help out?

 

As I say, new to the community.  If this post is misplaced, pardon.

    Hi Randall,

     

    This is quite some work, because the cameras operate at high speed, and without a lot of knowledge of what is going on, perhaps an FPGA or CPLD might be the route you may want to pursue - just guessing though, I am not knowledgeable on the camera. It may be LVDS interface to the camera, so then you need a device with LVDS capability. It would need a custom board made too (you couldn't use prototyping board). So, it is a fair amount of work for an Engineer, maybe several weeks : ( I'm not sure there is anything existing that could be re-used to reduce the amount of development. I don't know if the circuit diags are published for the camera - if they are, that may help you.

    Ah, I see.   Thank you for the reply and information, Shabaz.   The camera uses a standard format (CSI) and schematics are available, but it sounds like, for the time being, that my experiments with stepper motors are the way to proceed.  That said, hope springs eternal!   Perhaps something will become available that I and others may use.
