USB Scanner

Former Member

I am currently doing a project with opticard 821 (Scanner). I want to include a external switch to Arduino. When the switch is press, the scanner will then operate and then save the image in a SD card. Both the scanner and the Arduino are connected to computer. The scanner appear under imaging device while Arduino is under port at the device manager.  Is there a way I can control it using Arduino board and how can I go about doing it?

    Arduino - ArduinoUSBHostShield should solve the issue of getting a USB Port for the scanner to connect to, however I am unsure about how you would read the input, as it likely requires proprietary drivers which wont function on an Arduino.

    In this case, a Raspberry Pi might be better as there is more chance of a working driver.

    What if both the scanner and Arduino is connected to the same computer, is there a sample code for Arduino such that it can command the scanner to scan?

    Oh, you wish for a computer in between the two? The way I would do it is write an application for the PC that checks SPI (Serial) data from the Arduino. The Arduino application can write to serial whenever the button is pushed, the PC application reads it and does whatever it needs to do to make the scanner scan.

    I do not believe there is sample code but if you have a look at Serial examples for the Arduino it may point you in the right direction.

    Yes both the computer and arduino is connected to the same computer. Below is a sample code I have done. I am not sure what is the code for the scan function. Is there also any header for me to include? Please help me with the coding.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    void setup(){

      Serial.begin(9600);

      pinMode(10,INPUT);//connect switch to pin 10 of arduino

    }

    void loop(){

      if (digitalRead(10) == HIGH){

        scan()://call the function to scan

      }

      else{

      }

      delay(1000); //delay for 1ms

    }

    void scan(){

      /*

      This is the part where I am unsure. Both the scanner and arduino is

      connected to the same computer. How can I ask the device to do the

      scanning

      */

    }
