I have wired up my raspberry pi b+ to a RCA/Composite connection to plug into the TV all cables use a common earth and this is where i think the noise is coming from is there a simple way of removing this noise

If you want to add something to the RCA cable you could look at tone of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/RCA-Phono-Ground-Loop-Isolator/dp/B007545XWE Though I have no idea how successful it would be.

Some people have found noise artefacts being induced by certain types of power supply. Try switching to a different power supply and see if that improves/solves your issue.

The Composite cable doesn't carry any sound information, I guess you're referring to the 3.5mm stereo jack, is that connected to the TV?

You might need to lower your expectations, because inherently it will have some noise (it wasn't designed to be high quality, and it is in close proximity to parts on the RPI board that will cause noise on the output - nothing can be done about it), and it will be audible. Once it is in there, it can't be removed easily since it is at audible frequencies (along with your desired sounds).

Other things may be adding to it (as Paul mentions) but inherently some will always be there.

The only solution for hi-fi is a sound card, or a digital audio output (from sound card or HDMI).

They are often quite effective for ground loop problems, especially for car use, but I once took one apart, they use very cheapy typical iron-core transformers, so I did wonder how much distortion they were introducing ; ) Probably quite a lot hehe. Still, at least they eliminate the electrical whine.

    Never cracked one open.

Prefer to use balanced audio signals wherever possible.

Me too. I was happy when I noticed my car had balanced audio signals, just wish somebody would tell the car amplifier manufacturers to stop using unbalanced phono inputs : ( It's like they want people to suffer when the phono connections inevitably loosen, etc..
