What is the advantage of having LET-M connectivity over internet connectivity?

Hi community,

I have the question while reading about the LTE-M solutions and development kits in the market and normal internet connectivity which one can do on boards such as ESP32 etc.

What is the essential difference between these two? My idea is that LTE-M is that it connects to the service provider and can support the datarate of upto ~2-MBPS. A SIM card and LTE-M module is required for these.

In case of internet and clound connectivity only internet is most needed while it also somehow connects to the network of  a service provide like Vodaphone, Airtel etc. But on the other hand it provides high data rates.

Can someone point me some online resorce to differentiate? talking some key points of each technology?

Hi, you're right about this intuition.

LTE modules have 4G connectivity(nothing different than a 4G link in smartphones) and connect to a network via a service provider using SIM card. You can do call-dial up + internet + SMS stuff in this. These modules come with a variety of interfaces -- one common of them is UART and using MCU interface, with AT commands(used for MODEMS and networking stuff), its functionality can be controlled.

One example which I recently used in one of the IoT design is this SIM7600 module. The advantage with these are that it can be used in systems which are to be deployed in remote locations(unlike WiFi where you need wired internet link to the system and wireless range is limited). GSM, 3G modules are older versions of these.
