On mobile so cannot write much but this also states it as you say (from the book Electrical Network Theory) on pages 39-40 here: https://archive.org/details/electricalnetwor0000bala/mode/1up?view=thea…

linear component, one where if you double the input (applied voltage) the output (current) also doubles:

    examples: resistors, capacitors and inductors

non-linear component, where the output is not so simply related to the input:

    examples diodes, transistors, LEDs, MOSFETs

I can see why the Wikipedai article might confuse, but here's a link to it anyway.

A linear component is where the output has a constant relationship to the input, i.e. resistors. Other components like transistors zener diodes, and diodes are non-linear because thee voltage has to hit a threshold before they start to conduct, typically 0.7 volts on a transistor 3v on an LED, and the rated voltage on a Zener Diode.

Capacitors and Inductors and transformers are non-linear as their output varies against time and frequency, so strictly speaking they are non linear, though over a small operating range they may be linear enough to be considers as such.

Capacitors and Inductors are linear components.

Do some web searching for confirmation, this will get you started:

Oh well, I am man enough to admit when I am wrong. I haven't done electronics professionally for over 20 years, but did it since leaving school

Don't worry about it - I've made worse mistakes.
