Controlling a 220v Dust Collector

Dr.AlanJurim
Dr.AlanJurim over 3 years ago

I was hoping for some insight into a project I am working on. I have a 220v dust collector for my CNC machine, it uses a contactor to start and stop the motor load. The contactor also has a remote controller that allow for remote power control. I need to control the dust system from my CNC controller which in turn has a latching relay output (controlled by my gcode).

I need help with a circuit that can pulse (one shot) when the rising edge of the CNC relay controller pin to activate the dust system, and another pulse to trigger the motor contactor off when the CNC relay output goes low

The startup circuit seems easy enough with 555 timer that pulses when the relay latches on, I am having difficulty figuring out how to send a pulse when the circuit detects the relay load is turned off.

Thanks all in advance!

It sounds like the remote power control expects a pushbutton to toggle its state. Can you just toggle the CNC relay on and off with gcode to simulate a pushbutton at both the start and end of your gcode…

Simplest answer: Place a normal (non-latching) relay in series with your existing latching one. In other words, switch on the dust collector by pressing your remote button or whatever, which will activate the latching relay, but ultimate on/off control will be from the CNC software.

If you ever wish to override the CNC software and switch on the dust collector purely from the remote controller that's easy, you can OR the CNC and a rocker/toggle switch to the relay (using two diodes).
