Sterling stingray bass guitar

MTapia96
MTapia96 over 2 years ago

Bought an electric bass guitar from a pawn shop and bought a guitar amplifier from guitar center. Plugged it in tried tuning it installed new wires but doesn’t sound similar to the stingray bass guitars I’ve seen on YouTube videos. Did some research and had symptoms of wiring problems. opened it up to diagnose it, only to find a bad soldering job and what I think is an after market built in preamplifier. Desoldered and soldered all connections as it was but still didn’t solve the issues. Finally Decided to completely tear it down and found battery wires were connected wrong. Forgot to draw a wiring diagram and didn’t take picture for reference before dissecting it. Now I need help rewiring everything. I’m trying to find information on proper wiring diagrams but none include the preamp. It’s an electric bass guitar with a 5 way switch, 2 humbucker pickups and 1 volume and 2 tone control knobs. The preamplifier pcb has no part number to look up but is designed with a Texas Instruments ic chip TL071Cimage

This wiring diagram looks like it could be what you are after: https://www.talkbass.com/attachments/a31c587f-decd-4f99-bcb2-973962bd744f-jpeg.3460200/ The wiring colours match Jan's images as well…

A little bit of reference. At least some wires visible: wire broke off on sterling stingray 5 . It's the same PCB and https://imgur.com/gallery/ORFZysM

I saw that but it was for a different pre-amp module.

I tried to search for a similar design, but couldn't find one.

    3 questions:

    • Do you have the possibility to remove the PCB and see if anything is on the backside?
    • What was connected to it before you removed the wires (I know you don't have it written down, but maybe you know what different guitar contraptions were connected to it
    • Do you remember from some of the parts where/how they were connected? or no idea anymore?

I figured I’d use new wires and cut the wires but desolderer and removed pot and all remaining wires with a solder braid to clean extra solder. No parts numbers nor letters or names on back side. Just vias since it’s a double sided pcb design, mabe even multi layered. Used a flash light under both sides to get a better look and understanding on the circuit design even watched some videos on op-amps and the different circuits they could be used but I still couldn’t figure it out not even with the help of the ic chip pdf on the Texas Instruments website

I don’t see a 5 way 4 pole switch and your bass got 1 or 2 humbucker coils, cuz mine has 2 humbucker coils with 5 wires for each humbucker

Almost the same but I got 2 humbucker coils with a 5 way switch but I might use this one and hook up the coils in parallel sequence not sure yet

The pickup switch will turn the 2 humbuckers into 2 wires. You'll have to find the wiring schematic for that part of the instrument.
