How do I choose a suitable CO₂ sensor replacement like in this guide?

Hi everyone,

I found this blog post explaining how to find and replace a CO₂ sensor in a car. I'm trying to understand how to pick a compatible CO₂ sensor from options like those listed here on element14.
What key parameters should I match when selecting a replacement CO₂ sensor for automotive or similar use? Should I focus on voltage ranges, sensor response time, or compatibility with the ECU?
Are environmental CO₂ sensors appropriate for vehicle diagnostics, or should I only consider automotive-grade sensors?
How can I tell if a sensor supports real-time feedback needed for emission control systems?
Any recommendations on robust and reliable models for harsh automotive environments?

Thanks in Advance.

The first thing you need to do is work out if you want to replace an O2 sensor or a CO2 sensor - two completely different things.

The O2 (oxygen) sensor typically is measuring the working of the catalytic converter and operates at several hundred degrees C.

Some high end cars may have environmental CO2 sensors for cabin air con control.

In either case  - locate a replacement part that is intended for the car in question. As far as I know E14 do supply car spare parts - none of the oxygen sensors at UK Farnell would be suitable.

If you change the O2 sensor in a car you need to be able to test that the system is working - got to a car repair place.

Thanks for pointing that out — you're absolutely right, O₂ and CO₂ sensors serve different roles. To clarify my question:

I'm exploring the idea of using CO₂ gas sensors (like those sold on Element14) in non-standard automotive or enclosed environments, for example, cabin air quality monitoring or aftermarket applications (not replacing an OEM O₂ sensor).

Are there any CO₂ sensors suitable for automotive environments in terms of temperature range, vibration tolerance, and response time?
Can sensors like the ones listed here be adapted for this kind of application?

Any insights on how to integrate them (e.g., output type, calibration) would be great.

    There are many !

Your best bet is probably the Sensirion SCD40 or SCD41 - cheaper than the ones on your list at about £15 (Digikey) for one.

It has an I2C interface. (Not quite standard compliant but easy enough to work with.)

The average power can be quite low (this won't matter in a car) but if you use it beware the nasty high current spikes that it draws. I've used them in a design for a customer and we gave the SCD4x its own 3.3V regulator so that other things didn't get upset. You could use a very big capacitor but the regulator is probably cheaper !

Calibration requires a gas mixer, calibrated gas (not very expensive for CO2) and a suitable temperature controlled environment.

I have done a couple of CO2 sensor projects on element14. When I did my Invisible Hazards Project, I used a SenseAir S8 to measure CO2 (because it had a good price/performance ratio and I could program it to be sensitive to small changes in CO2 concentration). I also did an Amphenol air quality road test if you prefer a pre-programmed ready-made test rig.

Hello if this is for a car why not get the genuine part or one from the wreckers,?

    what model car, what age?

Is the old one faulty?    or do need to confirm if it is working ?

do you have a scan tool that shows all the parameters ?

if you dont have the correct sensor this will alter the fuel mapping

If you are considering cab monitoring, maybe sensor fusion can be helpful and cost effective. Newark stocks Nicla ME  :-)
