Why do some electronic devices that were working stop working if they remain unpowered for long periods? Is there an explanation for this and is it possible to avoid it?

Components especially electrolytic capacitors dry out. It not from use but age. I have a set of hips that have the same problem:)

Quality parts improve the longevity of equipment. Design and manufacturing also play a part. On a recent trip to the Panama canal, the tour guide operator was providing a comparison commentary between…

Hello i want to twist your question yes most of the repairs i have done for years has been replacing caps, yes this is pushed by the price of the product, AND it is pushed by the modern consumer, anyone under 30 years would rather have the latest and greatest and they want it now, there for it does not to live for 10 years as they will throw it away after 2 or 3 y

then look at modern junk LCD tv the componients used will be at there upper limits. i try to fit physicaly bigger caps where i can and push them away from Heat.

when i was learning it was a NO,NO to put diodes across each other to increse current yet you see that quiet a lot these days

if i want to keep something i think about ventilation and fitting a Gmov across power and at home old basics like earthing the tv aerial

another comon problem in 80s/90s was the rubber spacer used on the yoke on tube in tv or monitor,

the rubber would sweat and eat the wire coating and fry the yoke and line stage

the oldest colour tv i kept working  was a series 1 philps K9 up to 2005  from 1974

designed for quality and reliabilty not to a price
