Modix Reveals Large 3D Printer That Can Print Furniture

Modix has introduced the MAMA-1000, a pellet 3D printer for research, industrial production, and manufacturing. It combines both pellet and filament extrusion in one system. Users can pick either the less costly, faster pellet printing or filament printing that requires specific materials or finer detail. The MAMA-1000 3D printer processes pellets directly.

One of the most impressive features of the printer is the huge print volume: 1,000 x 1,000 x 1,000 millimeters. This is enough space to create large objects, including prototypes, automotive parts, furniture, aerospace test fixtures, and custom industrial tooling, in one go. At its core, the printer comes with a DYZE Design Pulsar pellet print head. It has 3 heating zones along with a screw mechanism that pushes plastic through the extruder. Overall, the pellet extruder can reach a flow rate of 500 mm3/s, printing up to 3 kg of material per hour. To do this, the printer uses 3 mm nozzles and optionally 5 mm and 1mm nozzles. Meanwhile, the Modix Griffin Ultra filament print head creates finely detailed objects with a superior surface finish. This technology has a flow rate of 160 mm3/s and can handle 1.75 mm filament through a 1.6 mm nozzle at 0.5 kg per hour.

The MAMA-1000 printer works with all sorts of materials, such as PLA, ABS, TPE, TPU, PVA, HIPS, polycarbonate, PETG, Nylon, and glass- or carbon fiber-filled composites. We can even feed it recycled polymers and filled composites with wood or minerals. With this flexibility, manufacturers can print chemical-resistant containers, impact-absorbing protective equipment, and high-temperature components for industrial use.

For precise positioning, the motion system features closed-loop NEMA23 motors. The Duet 6HC controller, which controls all operations, uses 32-bit electronics and monitors the printing process via a web control interface. Users can manage everything from the 7” touchscreen. In addition, the printer comes with an enclosed print chamber for optimal printing conditions.

Those who purchase the MAMA-1000 printer won’t have to worry about putting everything together, as it comes fully assembled and tested. However, it still needs a compressed air source (3.5 HP, 24-liter tank) to deliver pellets to the print head via compressed air. Other add-ons include a 50 kg batch pigments mixture (color consistency), a 25 kg batch pellet dryer with hot-air circulation, and an air filter at 550 m3/hour (HEPA and carbon filtration at 99.995% efficiency). There’s also an IDEX dual-head system. This enables the printer to use both the pellet and filament extruders.
