Mexico’s 2015 Cisco Live show currently has a display showing a Smart Connected Pipeline design. One of the more unusual displays at an exhibition : )
This is just a very short post as a visitor to the exhibition point of view, for more detail check out the link to the full Connected Oil and Gas solution here.
Many pipelines span thousands of miles and are built on systems that have limited functionality.
This solution allows for measurement of flows, leak detection, safety and security systems (including video surveillance, energy monitoring and the ability to isolate sections for repair through the use of block valve locations. Everything is managed from a modern control center which has redundant WAN connections, protection against attacks and communications including VoIP and collaboration tools. I loved the graphic visualization of the solution:
Some of the devices used include the rugged IR829GW router.
From a sensor standpoint I don’t know what the leak and flow detection/measurement is based on, but I’d love to know how easy to use the Texas Instruments TDC1000 TDC1000 (see the Ultrasonic Sensing RoadTest) would be for such pipelines.
