Internet of Things will Revolutionizing Healthcare

imageIn the Internet of Things (IoT), devices gather and share information directly with each other and the cloud, making it possible to collect, record and analyze new data streams faster and more accurately. That suggests all sorts of interesting possibilities across a range of industries: cars that sense wear and tear and self-schedule maintenance or trains that dynamically calculate and report projected arrival times to waiting passengers.

But nowhere does the IoT offer greater promise than in the field of healthcare, where its principles are already being applied to improve access to care, increase the quality of care and most importantly reduce the cost of care.

At Freescale, we’re excited to see our embedded technologies being used in applications like telehealth systems that deliver care to people in remote locations and monitoring systems that provide a continuous stream of accurate data for better care decisions. As the technology for collecting, analyzing and transmitting data in the IoT continues to mature, we’ll see more and more exciting new IoT-driven healthcare applications and systems emerge.

Read on to learn what’s happening now—and what’s on the horizon—for healthcare in the age of the IoT.

    Peter is right on.

I've seen a few IOT type examples on the net, where they often monitor power.

Makes good reading if you have criminal intentions, and want to hedge your bets to better target your market (ie victims).

Health information is even more important to retain privacy.

The Forget-me-not Challenge is using EnOcean products which offer encryption of the data, and this is to be commended.

Obviously once you get the data, its important to ensure it retains the privacy.

The one thing to bear in mind with IoT currently (With few Exceptions) is privacy and security, getting data out there is easy...

the current gold rush is to get as many devices on-line as possible and have them sending all this data out to cloud based services with little to no security or regard to privacy laws, most smaller IoT devices do not even have the power or capability to encrypt the data or communications channel

Now obviously Free-scale and other more advanced micro controllers / embedded systems can have this added if there powerful enough and have the resources to deal with it. Problem is most folks I have come across not in the industry so far ignore the privacy and security and go straight for the uploading of data not realizing there breaking oh so many laws or at least exposing their private data to anyone with a browser. Intentions are in the right place, just not the where with all

Now I am not saying the health care product falling into this category are all built without these considerations but there are a considerable number of them

If your going to tackle healthcare related products or any product that exposes data regarded as PI (Personal Information) or PHI (Personal Health Information) be sure of your obligations regarding the LAWS in your area / country. What you do with your own data is up to you but if you sell a product and commit an exposure of data, that will also fall on you

    Forewarned is forearmed image
