While the definition of the Internet of Things may change depending on who you ask, there is little doubt that this hardware, software and internet phenomenon has crept into all our lives – both professional and personal – and is here to stay.  Data - the storage of it and the automation of what we ask it to do for us - will likely be the single greatest influence on technological development in the coming years.  But far from fearing it, its ability to reduce the risk of human error, speed up processes and automate what were boring or mundane tasks make it a crucial element of 21st century life.

 

Our focus is temperature and humidity monitoring – after time, the two most measured parameters on Earth. There are many application areas where maintaining the right environment levels are imperative, from the temperature of a vaccine fridge to the humidity levels of a display case that holds a rare artefact.  It’s vital we know about changes in that environment immediately - failure to spot subtle or significant changes could result in the loss of hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of vaccine or put an exhibit in danger of irrevocable damage - but the collection of data on a longer term basis is also important.  Proving conditions were maintained correctly provides the basis of due diligence whether things go wrong or not.

 

The EasyLog Cloud is an automated, remote monitoring system which can be accessed from any internet-enabled device anywhere around the world. It is a safe and secure home for all your data and has many powerful functions to help you analyse it. EasyLog Cloud lets you automatically navigate to any detail of any monitoring device, using filters by device location, type and status. You can also quickly access and change device settings and acknowledge and reset alarms. The dashboard offers easy access to your most important information like recent device events or alarms, and also lets you ‘favourite’ your most vital devices.

 

The most important factor in data analysis is knowing when a parameter falls outside of set limits and is therefore in danger of ruining a product or damaging an environment. When this happens, or is close to happening, you need to be notified. The EasyLog Cloud can notify multiple recipients by email or push notifications to a smartphone, with SMS notifications coming soon. These notifications can be set to delay, repeat or be escalated through your chain of command, ensuring that vital communication isn’t missed.

 

Once this data has been collected it needs to be analysed or sometimes reported on for management or proof of findings. These functions are all built in to the same EasyLog Cloud, you can compare multiple devices, parameters and time periods to obtain any type of graph you desire. These results can then be exported ready for print or into an un-editable document.

 

You can also extract records which detail the system and device audit trail, this includes changes to users, locations and account settings, which ensures that all events have been logged and shows which user made the changes.

 

Before the introduction of data loggers, a simple thermometer or chart recorder would display temperature and humidity but such devices did not record longer term data or communicate instant alarm notifications without a visual check. Add inaccurate readings, missed or misread readings or the failure to spot alarms and the human element of data collection really begins to show some serious and potentially expensive flaws. In removing the need for human intervention with a piece of monitoring hardware, you can automate data collection remotely, securely and instantly.

The EL-MOTE and EL-WiFi families of temperature and humidity data loggers were created for the EasyLog Cloud, so they work perfectly to log and send data straight to the Cloud.
