IoT Security and Privacy - From the perspective of a LEGO citizen

I've been building a smart IoT city crafted out of LEGO, Arduino, Raspberry Pi and random stuff along the way. A good friend of mine, who runs a law firm and teaches at Indiana University, has contributed to my IoT blog with some helpful principals for ensuring security, privacy and legality are integral to every IoT solution.

Please share your thoughts and experiences! The InternetOfLego project is purely educational where I am learning about all things IoT and the general industry. I've read enough marketing fluff about IoT without many tangible ideas beyond a smart refrigerator or Hue light bulbs image

Cisco says the IoT market is headed to a 19 Trillion dollar market. I want to know what that truly looks like!

OR where you bind the adta elements tot he underlying data source, not refreshing the whole pages and performing the updates in the background, this gives the benefit of a responsive screen but not the overhead of a full refresh all the time

Learning to decouple data from the UI is critical for smooth running systems.

It is ok to run slow during the debugging phase, but then you want to let all of the data run full speed to see if you can reduce or increase system response.

I usually only update UI if the data changes by a meaningful value, which you need to figure out for each input.  That way you do not force too many updates with no real change.

Thanks! Yeah, this little project has taught me so much already. Just by using different messaging systems and local code, has helped me understand where bugs can cause the whole thing to fall apart. When dealing with IoT applications, its important to understand where the "Internet" portion should come in vs local logic. For example, a train signal should have local logic based on hardwired sensors but use the Internet for monitoring, overrides and used as a trigger for "non-critical" services. Same is true for things like temperature controls, where there should be built-in safety controls and then allow customization with an Internet application. Since my internet has been less than reliable, I've seen where a split in logic ownership has been critical (and frustrating). Since I worked out this logic with plastic bricks and DIY hobby electronics, I feel more comfortable scaling this up for a real world PoC.

    Cheers,

    Cory

    Very cool idea.

Your IOT enabled LEGO city can serve as an excellent simulation for looking at different issues involving IOT in various implementations.

We used this approach when building system simulators and it helps integration issues plus provides you with a semblance of real time data for analysis of the system.
