Lock the door, turn on the coffeemaker, and change the temp without leaving your bed

A happy Luna smart mattress pad user (via Luna 2015)

While the wearable technology market has been heating up with shoes, clothes, and bracelets that track everything from calories burned to your sleep pattern, a new entrant is taking a less invasive approach.

For those of you that want your sleep tracked and have smart homes, the Luna mattress pad is an affordable option that has a ton of impressive features. While a smart mattress will cost you at least $1000, the Luna mattress pad starts at $200 for a Queen mattress pad, if you pre-order now. They first batch is expected for delivery in August 2015.

The mattress pad is able to track your temperature, breathing, heart rate, sleep patterns, and even has a microphone to track your snoring (and possibly other activities?).

All of this information is uploaded to your iPhone or Android phone which is processed and used to adjust your temperature while you’re sleeping so that you stay comfortable throughout the night. The bed can adjust the temperature to keep you warm in the winter months, and cool in the summer months. It also has dual temperature controls that should be able to adjust the temperature for you and your partner individually. It all sounds super futuristic. Personally, I’m a bit sceptical of wearing technology 24/7, so the idea of a mattress pad sounds less troubling to me – although I don’t need one. But that’s the travesty of ‘smart’ devices, few people have any true use for them, but they are so shiny and multifunctional that few can resist.

The sleep tracking and temperature is just the beginning of what the Luna sleep mattress pad can do. If you integrate it with your smart home technology, like Nest, you can even program the mattress pad to turn on your coffee maker when you wake up in the morning! You can also sync it with your smart home security system to ensure that it locks all of your doors when you go to bed. For tinkerers, makers, and shakers out there, the Luna sleep program is Open Source, so you’re only limited by your imagination on what you can program it to do. I can only imagine the quirky projects that can come out of this. Currently, the Luna sleep mattress pad is completely compatible with Nest, so if you have another system, you’ll have to tinker in order to sync the two systems.

The mattress pad has 5 layers. The fabric layer has a layer of sensors directly underneath it. Then, a layer of batting separates the sensors and the temperature control layer. Finally, another fabric layer completes the mattress pad that can easily fit over any mattress. It is WiFi enabled to integrate with your other devices and has iFTTT integration as well. The sensors include ambient temperature and humidity sensors, ambient light sensors, biometric sensors, and sleep phase sensors. You can even put it in the washing machine.

Overall, it has a heck of a lot of tech and functionality for a good price. If you are finicky about your sleep or have a WiFi enabled coffee machine, this may be the bed of your dreams.

And we wonder why a large portion of the population is obese.

What's next, auto breakfast in bed?
