Using nRF24L01+ as BLE beacons in real products

I have been playing around nRF24L01+ for a while and found this blog post : "Bit-Banging" Bluetooth Low Energy - Dmitry Grinberg discussing the use of nRF24 for faking ble advertisement packets. I'm also working towards a product which uses BLE beacons and mobile app. I'm able to achieve the functionality I want by using nRF24 acting as ble beacon, also within a fraction of cost of other BLE beacons. Now can I actually make a product around this? Is there any legal/standards problem by using such a solution in a real product?

  • I believe the problem is when you would like to say that your product is Beacon or BLE compatible. All other chips that are widely used for BLE have BlueTooth LE certified stack. You could create your own or use open source one, but you still have to certify it and it is not cheap.

    But generally, if you use any 2.4 GHz transceiver to advertise Beacon packets and you do not violate RF band and tx power restrictions in your country, you should be good to go in my opinion. Then you just follow BLE and Beacon protocols.
