Success connecting to Arduino Cloud / TTN with MKR WAN 13x0: share your experience (solved)

Jan Cumps
Jan Cumps over 3 years ago

update: solved - it was the coverage.

If you have been successful with sending data to The Things Network / Arduino Cloud, using an Arduino MKR WAN 1300 or 1310, please share your experience.

skruglewicz and I have tried this. The configuration worked for both of us (Arduino Cloud, TTN, customised sketch upload), but we don't get an active sub-1 GHz connection.

If you were able to exchange data, please share where you tried this, what Arduino/antenna combination, and where you placed your gizmo. And if you want, the sketch you uploaded (remove the Arduino-generated ID from the header comments).

Thank you

Success! Walking tour, and in RED where I had coverage: edit: data also arrived at the Arduino cloud, as expected:

touristic info: the walk was partly through the Louis Bertrandlaan. One of the prettiest lanes of the Brussels district. It's a protected view since 2020. source: https://www.bruxellesbavard.be/nl…

Has your MKR board worked for any non-LoRaWAN communication, e.g. just plain LoRa? I suppose it could be a faulty MKR board. Yes they are functional. I have two MKR WAN 1310s, and they can perfectly…

In my case, the coverage is pretty weak.

But I'm still trying to connect..to the 2 in my vicinity by driving by until i get a signal. I'd be interested in finding out the success of others

Hope everyone is doing good out there.

    Regards.

Just guessing from the map, the distance to the closest gateway is ~ 7 or 8 miles?  That's a stretch for LoRa, but possible.  If there is clear line-of-site it could work.  You wouldn't happen to be at the top of a hill?

The link in my comment above for the TTN Mapper map should be https://ttnmapper.org/heatmap

Interesting... I'll need to drive by the gateway listed on https://ttnmapper.org/heatmap

Glad you we're able to use TTN Mapper to locate the nearest gateway to your home. In my case I will need to drive by the the indicated gateway on the TTN Mapper site. Thanks for doing your walk. My drive by the gateway indicated on the TTN map did not work. which is why it is not indicate on the TTN Mapper heatmap.

What I really like about the TTN Mapper Heatmap, is that it gives more information then the TTN Map. I shows the date and time of the last LoRaWAN chirp. also It gives me the Lat,Lon of the gateway

I'll be able to pinpoint the gateway using GPS.

I have done a range test before, here in the neighborhood. With TI sub-1 GHz devices: SimpleLink︎ Sub-1 GHz Wireless Microcontroller - ToolKit for Range Testing

The range isn't good here, although I'm on a hilltop. Maybe because all houses are brick ones from around 1900?

    hi Jan Cumps

I put together a gizmo similar to yours and drove to a location on the TTN Mapper.. It did not connect, but as you indicted I needed to press reset... I'll need to drive by the location again, when I get a chance.. I'll be sure to press the reset button when I get to the location. The LoRa gateways are really sparse in my area.. I'll be upgrading my blog post for the Just Ensure Design Challenges. Stay tuned..

    Thanks for all your help

Altering the default Arduino sketch so that it lights the on-board LED on success, makes it more practical.
I was walking and pushed the reset regularly, then checked if the LED came on.
If not, I pressed reset again.

That's easier than carrying a laptop with USB cable :)

... and I just tried - I get access to the TTN from here. It's the same gateway I could connect to  a year ago, while walking:
