Requesting IOT project ideas

SigaRT
SigaRT over 2 years ago

I'm presently pursuing a bachelor's in electrical and electronics engineering. IOT design is something that interests me a lot. It would be more beneficial to make a solid landing in this field if you could offer some suggestions regarding the current needs of IOT technology in the world. I'm willing to produce something interesting. Would someone kindly offer some project ideas or topics?

IoT with industrial focus or IIoT, for example heavy equipment connected to the internet for predictive maintenance.

Not sure it is strictly IOT but I have always wanted a device that I could remote activate or have automated to sprits my problem cat when she is in heat and yipping at my door. I've also been entertaining the idea of a bug seeking robot.

    a device that

    • can be left alone in a desolate place,
    • measure environmental things (humidity? noise? radiation? vibration?)
    • send that data to somewhere where you collect and process it
    • stays alive for years on its own battery or other power that it can generate harvest itself...

You could explore two IoT project ideas. Smart Home Automation, where you can automate devices in a home and control them through a mobile app or web interface, and Industrial IoT, where you can monitor industrial processes to optimize energy consumption, reduce waste, and provide real-time insights into equipment health. These projects have the potential for innovation and can be tailored. Good luck with your project!

IoT is a giant field with a lot of interesting applications, however if you are thinking about a career path, figure out what expensive or important assets benefit from automated monitoring, what sensors would be involved and what communications would be used. Then it becomes clear what IoT systems would be appropriate. Some ideas about what to focus on might include the health sector, the transportation sector, the industrial sector, etc. You can look at what threats there are in that sector that need to be monitored. Then figure out what small projects you can do that would mimic the requirements of something in a major sector. For example in transportation - boats always leak water or eventually fill with rain water, even just tied up to a dock. You might design a system that simply reports how much water is in the bilge, but you don't need a boat to build the system - any little container can simulate the boat, even a toy boat, but the sensors and IoT infrastructure would be similar to a real boat installation. (I know a boat that sank over a weekend because someone forgot to close the petcock - bilge drain plug)

Quite a number of years ago we started a project here on element14 to track the status of someone being in or out of bed, as a way to make sure the patient was getting up at an appropriate time, and also to make sure they were going to bed at an appropriate time - any deviation could be cause for concern. The caregiver could simply check an app to check status, but also automatic warnings could be sent if an expected event was missed. Unfortunately we never got very far.

With new technology that allows for person detection (not just PIR sensing), and inexpensive WiFi and LoraWan boards available, this might be a much more achievable project now.

Good idea! Even baby checks : ) There's a popular product but it is pricey for new mums. It detects (by camera) the fine movement of a pattern on cloth, to check the baby is fine.

In theory things like microwave detection could be used, but for obvious non-tech-related reasons that sort of sensor product wouldn't be the wisest thing to bring to market for parents!

I think it would be interesting to explore transforming old phones (Android, iPhone) into IoT devices long after they are no longer used for phone calls. Would make for interesting research in cyber-security too.

Maybe this could also be a suggestion for a Project14 theme!

I use am old phone for a security camera. There is an app called Alfred Camera. It works better than most bought security cameras.

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ivuu

I think it's great to be able to take advantage of old phones for stuff like that. With all the built in sensors, wifi, etc the possibilities could be endless what you could do.

You can start with IoT based home automation.

    https://www.theengineeringprojects.com/2022/11/iot-based-web-controlled-home-automation-using-raspberry-pi-4.html

This needs a Raspberry Pi. Raspberry Pi  4 is very expensive now a days. You can use Raspberry Pi Pico W or ESP32 instead.
