Cypress’ new EXCELON F-RAM: The Mission-Critical Memory for Industrial IoT

With the advent of IoT and Industry 4.0, factories are growing smarter and more connected. Industry 4.0 represents a paradigm shift from “centralized” to “decentralized” industrial automation in these factories. This means that field-level equipment such as sensors, motor controls and drives, not only collect and feed data to control-level equipment like Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), but also make decisions locally and take corrective action when required. With this advancement, continuous and reliable data acquisition is required not just at industrial control systems, but also at thousands of connected wireless IoT sensor nodes that will become ubiquitous in the factories of tomorrow.

Wireless IoT sensor nodes as well as industrial control systems in various segments including automation, energy management, process measurement and test measurement, need high-performance non-volatile data-logging memories. In all these cases, non-volatile data-logging memories are used to continuously log and capture real-time system state data, in case of power loss or system failure. Cypress’ new ExcelonTM-Ultra family of Ferroelectric RAMs (F-RAM) meets these challenges head-on by offering a low-pin-count high-speed interface with virtually unlimited endurance, fast writes, low-power operation, and instant non-volatility. Furthermore, Wireless IoT sensor nodes are power-constrained and require non-volatile memories that can continuously log real-time system data over the entire lifetime of the sensor node, with the lowest possible power consumption. Excelon F-RAM is the ideal choice for this application and is the industry’s most energy efficient non-volatile memory, consuming ~200x less energy than serial EEPROM and ~3,000x less energy than NOR Flash.

The Excelon development kit is a low-cost hardware platform that enables design and debug with Excelon F-RAM using the industry leading Cypress PSoC 63 Line of MCUs. With the on-board low-power PSoC 63 controller and BLE connectivity, the Excelon development kit provides the key components needed to develop a secure and low-power IoT system with local, energy-efficient data-logging with Excelon F-RAM.
