Live at IOT Summit Chicago: What We Talked About Over Lunch

I'm live at IOT Summit Chicago, being held at the W hotel, not far from element14's office in Chicago.

 

After a busy morning of IoT presentations, we broke for lunch -- a little late because the IOT security presentation had a lot of questions. (Lunch: Tasty turkey wraps, green salad, topped with a brownie!)

 

Each table had an informal conversation about IoT. Here's a list of what my table talked about:

 

  • 5G and the limited spectrum problem
  • Machine learning training from the cloud to the edge
  • IoT use cases: pedestrian safety, smart grids, etc
  • Smart roads (aka, the pothole detector for Chicago) ; using robots to actually repair the potholes.
  • The expectation of IoT innovation in assistive technology
  • Each stage of automation from steam, industrial to autonomous improved the lives of people
  • The home automation problem: using "new" encrypted sensors with consumers who want to use "old" network devices that can cause big problems in security. Consumers may not understand the problem to save a few bucks.

 

What do you talk about at lunch when you talk about IOT?

    I loved it. I could go for a run along the lake in the morning, then a good and beautiful walk to the office at Monroe.

    Well, you talk about all those cool Smart City sensors you encountered on the way to the Summit as well as the neato IoT devices that are keeping the temp in the room at a comfortable level and the lighting just right; or the lack there of.

     

    Personally, considering the terrible fires that have hit Northern California recently, I would look to open a discussion on how the proper IoT implementation of sensors could have given those folks advanced warning so they could have evacuated earlier.  I mean, how hard can it be to detect smoke, right?

     

    Oh, I could go on and on.

  • When we talk shop at lunch it isn't about IoT although it could be about wearable technology. The last conversation I had where IoT came up was just some speculation about whether IoT build-out had anything to do with the nasty MLCC shortage that is causing us production woes. I vividly remember the cyclical chip shortages that would cause allocation, which would cause hoarding and over ordering, which would eventually cause overproduction, which caused prices to drop, which caused production to stop which caused the cycle to repeat... but I haven't seen any reasonable explanation of this MLCC shortage...
