Breaking Down Edge Processing with NXP’s Gowri Chindalore and EEJournal’s Amelia Dalton

placeholder

Edge processing has developed into a full-fledged technical revolution, and one of our goals as a company is to help the industry achieve high-performance and energy-efficient computing through scalable, embedded processing. We’re watching the impact this technology has on humanity in real-time, as more and more devices come into our lives. It’s not an abstract concept or some day-after-tomorrow innovation. Edge computing is happening everywhere we look and anything with such ubiquitous application will always capture our imagination and inspire us to ask how this can be used to make the world a better place.

The Changing Role of Edge

NXP’s own Gowri Chindalore sat down with Amelia Dalton to discuss edge processing on her podcast, Fish Fry, where they explore some of its challenges and promises, as well as where the movement is heading. Their conversation reframes the edge topic from being a technology harnessed by the IoT industry as a mere financial growth driver, to how bringing processing power to the edge can contribute to society. From more responsible use of our natural resources to protecting human rights, this area of innovation is being driven by our nature to look for ways to make things better.

Challenges for Edge

Two of the biggest challenges facing edge processing are energy efficiency and data management. Chindalore and Dalton discuss how the sheer volume of devices – along with the data they’ll generate and the power they’ll consume - need to be carefully considered during the design process. As a company, we’re focused on these two areas so edge devices can be as efficient as possible, and so users can be confident that their data will be protected. You can listen to their discussion here, and for more information about NXP’s Edge Computing portfolio, you can learn more here.

We’re not alone in addressing these challenges and if the industry is going to fully realize the potential of edge computing, removing barriers to adoption is critical.
