IoT Poll: How Smart is Your City?

Smart city initiatives is one of the important pillars of the the use of IoT. They are expected to grow and multiply in the coming years. However, these initiatives require either leadership in the public sector or public/private partnerships. Both cost big money.

It's a big job to make a city smart. You not only need investment money, you need to manage change among all of the city's departments and the citizens themselves. This means breaking down the power and tech silos to get the buy in to make the smart city initiative work.

Poll Question: How Smart is your city? Is the place where you live adopting smart city technology? Or, are they spinning the wheels of indecision and hung up on doing things the ways they used to in the 1950s?

I live in a small town Haslet part of Tarrant County, just West of Alliance Airport, here in  Fort Worth. Here we have a co-op for our power, and they have installed smart power meters. But that being said there is not much called smart. It has been a rural community, which is now exploding with houses, apartments, and stores.

This is a big topic. I doubt any comprehensive list of KPIs even exist to get a handle on how cities stack up.

There is monitoring and sensors and databases, communications and publishing, analysis and planning, user experience, etc.

What city infrastructure is already smart? Presumably power management and communications are already pretty smart.

Other infrastructure like waste management and traffic management may have a longer way to go.

Some off-the-cuff performance indicators might include:

    • Does your city have an on-line map of air quality sensor data?
    • Does you city publish a map of free Wi-Fi coverage?
    • Is Wi-Fi available on public transit and in public buildings.
    • Does your city have a map of electric vehicle charging stations?
    • Is there a map of waste disposal sites and infrastructure?
    • Is there an app that shows location and speed of all public transit vehicles in real time, along wit ETA to your location?
    • What percentage of local stores have on-line ordering and immediate delivery?
    • Are drones delivering to your home?
    • Are there autonomous taxis in you city?
    • How many robots does your city have?
    • How many cameras does your city monitor? How many are available to the public on-line?
    • How many city services are available on-line?
    • Are the library services in your city automated such that you never need to deal with a human?
    • Is there an app developed by the city that shows all city points of interest and schedule of events?
