Poll: Are you presently using an Internet-connected hand tool?

IoT. That used to mean Internet of Things. But the world has thrown a monkey wrench into that. IoT means Internet of Tools!

The Internet of Tools essentially means that a hand tool is connected to the internet to provide data about the tooling action you have taken. Crimping. Hammering. Drilling. Soldering. Expect to see the Internet of Tools to explode with new products in the coming years.

There are several caliper manufactures that support wireless data collection (Wifi, BlueTooth, UWave, etc.). Typically they are used in a Statistical Process Control (SPC) like application, where devices…

I didn't vote Yes, and I haven't seen any smart handtools, but DeWALT has a whole line of mesh networked power tools and Qubes seems to even connect hand tools.

I would like an internet connected multimeter. More specifically, I would like the technician at the other end of the phone to have an internet connected multimeter. "What reading did you get?" "It's good…

The Siretta Grahpyte cell phone tester, currently in suspended status for a RoadTest review,  offers the feature of incorporating the device data into SIretta's data engine to display the company predictions of the cell towers in your area. This does require them to have the data. During my trip abroad Siretta asked me if it was safe for them to share the data of my travels. They could review the path of the highways I travelled while the unit was recording.

I wrote an article for publication a number a years ago on camera meta data. The assumption is that recording the data in photo's is safe, until someone proves otherwise. I despise the security posture of fully open with the option to enable more security. I rather full security by default with the option to lower the posture if you desire.

As a former IT Security Specialist, my first response to sharing data (i.e. rewards cards) is no. I suspect the same would apply to power tools or my fridge that wanted to share its location data.
