Audio Amplifier questions

Former Member
Former Member over 9 years ago

Hello everybody!

I am trying to make an audio amp, but I don't know which IC to use. This is problem number one.

I would liek to do something like what Ben Does with his xbox 360 laptop audio amp, which he uses buttons

to amplify the audio.

Here, on the 1.35 video mark you can see that. He does not mention what is the second IC, and the

first one I can't find here in my country, any alternatives to that?

Also now, problem 2! I need a way to, when connecting headphones to it, it would cut the speakers sound. is that possible using only

hardware, headphone jacks only?

Thank you in advance everyone!

Hey Lucy, I can answer only to the second question. What you ask in point two has a clear answer: YES image

As you already say plugging the earphones in the micro jack there are some contacts that switches and only is just the signal. You can get just this signal, for example pulling it to low, nothing to do with the audio Left + Right + audio gnd and use this as a common input pin to switch automatically the speakers or the earphones.

By looking at the Datasheet, he's using a Digital Potentiometer, something like this DS1809-010+ DS1809-010+ Maxim Integrated | DS1809-010+-ND | DigiKey.  You can start off with a regular audio potentiomenter, tie one side to gnd, the other to 5vdc, and the tap to pin 18, start off with 100k, or even a 10k.  The one selected is push button, one tap, 5vdc.

    Regards,

    Dave M.

I didn't know about digital potentiometers, sorry for the noobness, but that was really nice to discover lol.

I did find to buy around here was this one.:

    X9511-pinout.jpg

And the amplifiers themselvs were these.:

LM386.: (But it seems to be mono, not useful since I need 2 channels)

    LM386-Connection-Diagrams-Top-View.jpg

TL064CN.: (4 Channels, a bit too much but ok, it's cheap, just not sure it would work the way I need it)

    STMICROELECTRONICS-TL064-pinout.jpg

LM324.: (Also 4 channels, looks quite the same as the one above)

    324_pinout.gif

I think I didn't explain why I need these, well, I am working on a raspberry project that will make use of audio speakers,

and whenever I wanted I would connect a headphone to the amp and cut the speakers sound. (As Enrico said it's quite possible).

It is supposed to stay inside a case of some sorts, and what would be visible is only the headphone jack to cut the speakers, and

the buttons to increase and decrease volume.

Normal potentiometers would not look s good in the end, buttons are cool for that purpose =D

Sorry, I tried to be as clear as possible, not sure if I suceeded on this.
