Howdy,

I just saw this novel wire stripper on Make blog. It's another example of the cool open source 3D-printable designs on Thingiverse:

I like the simplicity of the design.

As for nicking the wire, you could use a piece of tape across the blades just above the cut through point and use a twisting motion to get past that issue. I used to work on military gear and a nicked wire was unacceptable.

What is better than the LED is a small sounder, that way no need to watch anything other than the cutting itself.
