It really depends what you will use it for check out this great article. How to Choose the Right Platform: Raspberry Pi or BeagleBone Black | MAKE

Haha. Since those rocks are all powered by Allwinner, just under their brand names let's add a little "China Export" mark. Morgaine.

    Seconded.

And that article is outstanding in its symmetry, fairness, balanced understanding of its author, and good coverage too.  We've seen a large number of attempted comparisons of the two boards since the BBB launched, and most of the others failed in one area or another.  This one succeeds.  Very fair write-up, and reads well.

If you're an engineering student and a hobbyist, you're probably more on the BBB side of the decision because you'll outgrow the Pi's limited hardware interfacing rapidly and you'll benefit from the BBB's openness and enjoy its twin Programmable Realtime Units --- it's much more of an "engineer's SBC".  But if you have the money, buy both and the Pi can play music while you work on the BBB. image

On the other hand, engineering students never have money, I know. image

    Morgaine.

It may read well, the problem being that it's skewed by the inherent inaccuracies.

The obvious one being the list of OS for the Pi contains Ubuntu. Then later he says that Ubuntu dropped support in "late April" with a link to a post on the RPF forum from April 2012. He totally fails to notice that Ubuntu dropped support for ARMv6 with the release of 10.04 which was back in 2010, quite a while before the Pi showed up.

Lots of other parts don't make much sense, but as there are errors on both sides of the equation it ends up reading much better than reality.  Interestingly, things like issues with angstrom only get touched upon in the comments.

Little is made of the fundamentals. BBB is decent hardware with dodgy software which is easily replaceable. OTOH RPi has some basic hardware problems that software can't fix.

I'll stop there. I'm starting to think that the question Saurabh asked is a FAQ that only requires a one word answer: OLinuXino image

Fair enough, there is clearly still room for a perfect article. image

Nevertheless, as you admit yourself, it has only minor failures and omissions, and they're kind of balanced --- there is definitely no deliberate skew, and I don't even think that one could fairly point to an accidental skew either.

Also, imagine what an article would be like if it was written with the depth of knowledge that there is in this group.  It would frighten prospective buyers away from both, since nothing is close to perfect. image

    Morgaine.

Addendum. Note that devoted media consumers would say that BBB has hardware inadequacies too, which we don't feel to any significant extent owing to our lack of interest.  So I really do think it's well balanced, although as you correctly point out, quite some way from perfect.

Absolutely, nothing is perfect.  There are many errors in that article though, pointing them out and explaining them would likely take some time image

Like you say, a proper exposition of the realities would scare people away. Then again, maybe it should. Glossing over the imperfections is shortsighted.  I do wonder how many of these SBC's end up gathering dust at the back of a drawer due to the owner not knowing that they were getting themselves into.

    I do agree with that.

Perhaps the answer is to start with a very comprehensive wiki table of features and issues, filled out very diligently and informatively (percentages for everything that isn't boolean) with lots of wiki discussion to justify each row, over a period of at least several months dedicated to this effort.  Then, when most contributors are satisfied according to some statistical metric, we could write a comparison article focusing on those issues deemed of most importance to the major categories of stakeholder.

It would be a lot of work though.  I'm undecided about the value of that, since both boards are probably about to be superceded by new models, and Olimex's cue ball is heading straight towards them on a collision course. image

    Morgaine.

Hah!  That mental image deserves a picture of an Earth with Pi and BB flags poking up from it, and an asteroid with "Olimex" written on it hurtling in their direction. image

lol.. and unlike the movies it's too big to be diverted, but even if it was there's another one coming from the other direction with Cubietech written on it image

on a slightly more serious note, there are several different boards and manufacturers with Allwinner SoCs, there's several with Freescale iMX6 boards. The Pi and BB stand out as being the only source of boards using their respective SoC. That may change a bit if Olimex do build an AM3352 based board next year, but they've talked about it for a while and seem to be happily building new and interesting Allwinner based boards instead. It does kind of leave you with the feeling that BB & RPi have targets painted on them though image

The only thing for sure is that 2014 will be an interesting year for us, the users.
