How to publish OSHW schematics

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

I'm in the process of finalizing the designs for an open source hardware project (a pressure sensitive iPad stylus, see http://facebook.com/pressurepen ), and I'm at the point where I want to publish and share the various designs. I have 3D models on Thingiverse and Shapeways, and the app source is on Github. How and where should I publish the circuit diagrams and the files for the circuit board?

I imagine a standard format for the PCB files would be Eagle, but I think I'd like to publish the circuit diagram or schematic as well, so someone could design their own PCB based on it. Is there a standard format and repository for such things?

Not sure about a standard format for this sort of thing, but PDF, JPG etc are usually reliable enough. Just make sure they are of a high enough resolution in case someone wants to make large copies to work from. Nothing worse than trying to scale something to print it out and finding it is all pixelated!

For storing them, the projects site can work, and so can sites like Github. With things like Eagle v6, all the files are XML based, which makes it much easier to use git with them. Either host them in their own repo, or add them into the app source as a seperate folder. Git hub also supports downloads, meaning you could easily create a zip containing all the relevant files like schematics and publish that. You may also want to have a look at the Wiki pages that your Github repo provides. They should let you create some useful project pages to host your images.

Hope this is a useful start for you! Interested to see what other suggestions people have.
