How to publish OSHW schematics

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

I'm in the process of finalizing the designs for an open source hardware project (a pressure sensitive iPad stylus, see http://facebook.com/pressurepen ), and I'm at the point where I want to publish and share the various designs. I have 3D models on Thingiverse and Shapeways, and the app source is on Github. How and where should I publish the circuit diagrams and the files for the circuit board?

I imagine a standard format for the PCB files would be Eagle, but I think I'd like to publish the circuit diagram or schematic as well, so someone could design their own PCB based on it. Is there a standard format and repository for such things?

the best way to ensure that your project remains open source, and is recontributed to. us as many methods of distribution as posible. plus a few other tips

    1. publish schematics as pdf, jpg and native cad files(regardless of format.)

    2. publish your gerbers, there are many free gerber viewers, and it will allow anyone to have boards made. if your board is simple enough(single or double layer) use a jpeg format too for those interested in etching thier own.

    3. try not to use parts that require a nondisclosure agreement just to view datasheets, it may be easy enough to get a data sheet, however it may turn some away from your project.

    4. support your origonal desighn, and share your problems. many of the people involved in the OHS community are more than willing to help with code, hardware, circuit analisis etc.

    5. give a few away, this is a great way to get feedback and an oppertunity to get skilled people involved in your projects.

    6. HAVE ALL DISTRIBUTABLE MATERIAL AVAILABLE IN ONE LOCATION, the easier it is for anyone to get all related info of your project the more will come. (a zip file on github or sourceforge)
