Seeking Your Opinion: The Proposed Kit for the Polymer Capacitor Projects Scheduled for March

rscasny

As part of my interest in providing learning experiences and useful information to the element14 community on polymer capacitors, I am planning for March a polymer capacitor project with a free kit.

My goal is to get some polymer capacitors in your hands and have members build any kind of capacitor project. It can be anything as simple as an RC circuit to something more involved like a power supply. It's up to you. It would be nice to see some of caps I include in the kit used in the project. Now, I won't be providing everything for a project build--just the capacitors, a parts box and (hopefully a cap/ESR tester, depending on what my boss agrees to budgetwise).

I figure I will get a lot of opinions on this. That's fine; all of your opinions are usually very interesting! Again, my goal is get everyone more familiar with polymers and I think getting some in your hands, not matter what the projects are, will be a benefit to the community.

So, here is what I am proposing. I'm just pasting in the links. Tell me what you think.

Afrotechmods has some excellent videos exploring the capacitors selection: one of them is a video where he builds a very simple class AB audio amplifier, he explains very well how the capacitor selection…

I like this idea!. Using existing popular designs and swap some capacitors to polymer.

    Hi Randall,

It's really great that element14 is working so hard to get us beyond obstacles to using polymer technology.

It reminds me about when I read how Avnet many years ago worked with designers to get LED technology adopted in lighting, since they were more familiar with incandescent light-bulbs etc.

Many products like capacitors are sometimes way more complicated than their datasheets could hope to cover (although some manufacturers do publish lots of information) - this adoption program is really valuable, getting engineers to try them out.

This isn't a project idea as such, but just to learn a bit more: I'm hoping to try to measure the typical ESR of some polymer caps, so I have some 'go-to' part numbers when working with (say) voltage regulators/LDOs.

I wasn't entirely sure how to do it, I have an LCR meter from ebay but I didn't know how accurate it was, so I have ordered a new one from China.. waiting for it to arrive after the new year hols. But am hoping to experiment with a home-made VNA too, in case it provides more detail, but that will be experimental. I'll write up what I can.

    Hi Shabaz.

Initially, I was motivated by the MLCC/Polymer thing. But having done the quiz and the overall response and participation has been good, I think I will do this for other kinds of components. I'm wondering how much our members know about inductors? (Does anyone know what 'inductive kick' is or is that term gone by the way side?)  I might do it for resistors as well.
