SemiSolid state batteries developed by 24M could be used in EVs

24M, an innovative battery company has announced the development and deliverance of commercially viable, high energy density lithium-ion battery cells. Using its SemiSolid design in its facility, the company managed to reach energy densities that exceed 250-watt-hours per kilogram - which is the highest amount for EV applications.

Actual cell chemistry in the battery cell or costs per kWh are not known. The high energy density-nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) cells are part of a $7 million three-year contract awarded to 24M in 2016 by the United States Advanced Battery Consortium LLC with the U.S. Department of Energy. The program is intended to help develop electrochemical energy storage technologies supporting the advertisement of hybrid, plug-in hybrid, electric vehicles. In order to reach the final USABC 2020 density of 350-watt hours per kilogram by the end of the year. The company has created a multi-use laboratory approach that includes the use of silicon for high energy density anodes.

 

24M has also supplied similar NMC battery cells with energy reaching 280-watt hours per kilogram and beyond to an industrial partner. Higher energy densities were reached by improving 24M's SemiSolid electrode technology, which eliminates a pore-clogging binder, enabling higher and more active material densities that can be reached with the usual electrodes. This technology is the way the company hopes to reach energy densities of 400 watts per kilogram. These types of battery cells would more than double the longevity of the Tesla Model 3. 24M is targeting manufacturers of hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery electric and fuel cell vehicles.

The company is able to advance energy storage by creating a more cost-effective solution with SemiSolid lithium-ion technology. Re-designing the battery cell and the manufacturing method allows the company to solve the energy storage problem by making it inexpensive and improving the performance of it at the same time.
